Resigning from a job is one of the last stages of your job search. Already you have been through many stages from online job hunting, to registering with recruitment consultancies to interviewing. Finally, the finish line is in sight. However, notifying your current employer of your resignation is hurdle you must clear to achieve your career objectives.
Your resignation and how you resign is often tied into your reasons for leaving your current employer. Therefore, it is vital to consolidate these reasons and be clearly focused on the “why”, “when” and “how” you will be leaving the business.
Resigning from a job – “Why?”
The why, is normally because you have found a new position. Although, there can be other reasons, ranging from relocation to medical reason or a change in personal circumstance. On occasion there can be reasons for your resignation such as the job being unfulfilling. Alternatively, you may have had an issue with your manager or colleagues. Which could be viewed as negative even though they are normal part of life. However, when handing in your notice it is vital that you remain professional. It is important to not burn any bridges.
Resigning from a job – “When”
Remember to check all the details in your contract. It is best to check all these details before you start your job search, which Senex Recruitment will check with you when you register. Hopefully, all will be clear before you speak to your employer, and you will know your contractual obligation regarding notice period. During your discussions with your current employer, they may ask for flexibility regarding this date, for business reasons (i.e. a project delivery date etc). It is important to understand that you are about to enter a new relationship with your future employer. Your contractual obligation is as it stands, and you have no requirement to extend your notice period. In fact, it could cause issues for your new employer, and it is always best to start a new role on the front foot.
Clearly state to your current employer your understanding of the notice period and when your final date will be.
Resigning from a job – “how”
Our first piece of advice is, do not resign until you have a formal offer letter/email from your new employer. Contracts come later, often on the day you start or even later.
Once the offer is finalised and you are happy to move forward to your resignation it is important to prepare a letter.
Our advice is to keep the letter short and simple, while maintain a professional and polite manner. On most occasions there is little need to provide details regarding the “why” you are leaving, beyond a simple mention of a new opportunity. Etc. Many companies will hold a debrief meeting to get a better understanding of your leaving. The resignation letter is unlikely to be the place to express your views, especially if they are negative. Of course, a positive reflection upon your time as their employee will always be welcome.
Resigning from a job – The Resignation Letter
We suggest the following points should be included while keeping your message clear and concise.
- Make sure you address the letter to the right person.
- Use a formal letter template, only resign by email as a means of last resort.
- State your resignation clearly providing the date of resignation and you projected last working day (there maybe additional factors to consider regarding this date such as holiday allowance)
- Offer to assist with the transition if necessary, however remember your contractual obligated to work only to end of your notice period.
- Express gratitude for the opportunities and experiences you had.
- Close the letter with a professional closing and your signature.
