Senex Recruitment is recruiting for an experienced Senior Maintenance Engineer to join a successful manufacturing business.
This opportunity combines hands-on engineering responsibility with team leadership, overseeing a small maintenance team comprising two Maintenance Engineers and an Apprentice. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining equipment reliability, supporting production performance and driving continuous improvement within a busy manufacturing environment.
Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, you will be responsible for helping to maximise machine availability, coordinating maintenance activities and ensuring engineering standards remain consistently high across the operation.
This position offers a stable Monday to Friday daytime working pattern and would suit a proactive maintenance professional looking to take the next step in their engineering leadership career.

The Role

As Senior Maintenance Engineer, you will lead a small engineering team responsible for machine availability, preventative maintenance and equipment reliability across the manufacturing operation.
The role combines practical maintenance engineering with people leadership, requiring a proactive individual who can diagnose technical issues, coordinate maintenance activities and support operational improvement projects.
Working closely with the Maintenance Manager, you will help ensure equipment operates safely, efficiently and in line with production requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Management

  • Lead and supervise a team of Maintenance Engineers and an Apprentice.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring and day-to-day support.
  • Support training and development activities within the engineering team.
  • Promote high standards of engineering, safety and housekeeping.
  • Lead by example through a hands-on approach to maintenance and problem solving.
  • Provide support during periods of absence and ensure continuity of engineering cover.

Maintenance and Engineering

  • Carry out planned preventative and reactive maintenance activities across manufacturing equipment.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical faults using a structured and methodical approach.
  • Coordinate maintenance activities through the company’s maintenance management system.
  • Develop and improve preventative maintenance programmes to maximise equipment availability.
  • Support engineering improvement projects and capital expenditure activities.
  • Liaise with external technical specialists when required.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on reliability, productivity and downtime reduction.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.

Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure all maintenance work is carried out safely and in accordance with company procedures.
  • Maintain compliance with Health & Safety, Environmental and Quality requirements.
  • Promote a safe working environment across all engineering activities.
  • Ensure engineering housekeeping standards remain consistently high.
  • Report incidents, hazards and unsafe conditions through the appropriate channels.
  • Use personal protective equipment in accordance with company procedures and training.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Provide clear and effective handovers where required.
  • Work closely with Production and Maintenance teams to support operational performance.
  • Assist with maintenance planning and resource allocation.
  • Communicate effectively across departments and with external support providers where necessary.

Required Skills and Experience

The successful candidate is likely to demonstrate:
  • Apprentice-trained or professionally qualified engineer or technician.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical engineering experience (18th Edition).
  • Experience maintaining equipment within a manufacturing or production environment.
  • Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving capability.
  • Strong organisational and record-keeping skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience using maintenance management systems.
  • IT literacy and confidence using engineering software and systems.
  • Self-motivated approach with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Ability to lead, motivate and support others.

Desirable Experience

Experience within a plastics, packaging or high-volume manufacturing environment would be advantageous.
