The Company and wider industry questions
The important thing is to show a real interest in the company and the market it works in. What is the biggest challenge of this job?
Take the initiative to query the challenges you’ll face in the role; you’ll show you’re not afraid of them. Moreover, it will help you gain a better understanding of how the role will fit into your career.
What was it about our last interview that prompted you to invite me to a second one?
A bold question, but one that suggests that you are keen to hear feedback and eager to apply knowledge from past successes to future efforts. It will also give you vital insights into the thoughts of the interviewer. Certainly, ask this of your Recruitment Consultant before the second interview to help you prepare.
Ask about the previous incumbent of the role, what were their success in the job and why have they moved on?
Another bold question, and often one your recruitment consultant may know the answers too. However, it can offer real insight into the challenges of the job. Again, this question must be judged as to whether it is appropriate to ask.
How do members of this team/business collaborate?
You can ask this question as a follow-up to an interviewer’s questions about your impression of company culture and management style preferences. It is probably a “softer” way of asking about a manager’s management style and will probably give you a better answer as to whether the business is the right fit for you.
What are the short, medium, and long-term goals of the business?
This is a useful second stage interview question to really demonstrate your interest in the company. It gives you an idea of how ambitious the company is.
If I was successful, when would you like me to start?
Every candidate wants to know when a decision will be made, but companies have untold other tasks to sort through, and hiring managers may not appreciate feeling like they are being pressured about it. This question frames the issue in a different way, making it sound as though you are doing the company a service by coming to help them, and it will get you the answer as to when you can expect a decision.
Other example questions to ask.
- Do you see any gaps in my qualifications or experience that I would need to address once I start working for you?
- If I were successful, what improvement or changes would you hope I’d bring to the business?
- What are the immediate goals or projects that the successful candidate will be working on?
- How would you describe the company culture and values?
- What opportunities for professional development and growth are available within the company/team?
- How does this role contribute to the overall objectives of the department/company?
