Title: Mechanical Design Engineer

Senex Recruitment is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer for a specialist engineering company based near Farnborough, Hampshire.
This is a varied position for a practical engineer who can take mechanical designs from concept through to manufacture. Alongside 3D CAD design, you will work with fabrication partners and machine shops, support supplier selection and purchasing, and maintain the technical documentation.
The role offers hybrid working, combining home-based work with time on site near Farnborough, Hampshire. Candidates should therefore live within a reasonable travelling distance of the area. Some occasional travel to suppliers, manufacturing partners and other business locations will also be required.
You will report directly to an experienced Technical Director, who will provide guidance and mentorship on the company’s specialist products. Previous experience within the company sector is not essential, but you will need a strong background in mechanical design ideally with knowledge of sheet metal and fabrication (pneumatics knowledge would be a bonus).
The Mechanical Design Engineer Role
Working across design and engineering while ensure technical compliance you will help turn engineering requirements into robust and manufacturable products.
You will also provide technical support to colleagues in sales and purchasing, answering engineering questions, assessing proposed component alternatives and helping resolve manufacturing and design issues.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing, modifying and optimising mechanical designs using SolidWorks (or a similar 3D CAD package).
- Producing accurate production drawings, CAD models and associated engineering information.
- Converting existing and legacy engineering data for use with modern design software.
- Designing components and assemblies with manufacturability, quality, safety and cost in mind.
- Working with machine shops, steel fabricators and other manufacturing partners.
- Reviewing supplier proposals and resolving technical or production-related queries.
- Helping in the selection of materials (i,e, steel), components and associated equipment. As well as supporting the management of external engineering suppliers.
- Providing practical technical support to the sales team in response to customer enquiries.
- Managing CE and UKCA marking activities.
- Compiling, reviewing and maintaining product Technical Files.
- Producing user manuals, operating instructions, safety information and other technical documentation.
- Supporting continuous improvement across products, processes and supplier performance.
About You and you Engineering Background
You will be an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with a practical understanding of how engineered products are manufactured.
You should be comfortable working independently as you will be predominately remotely based, managing different priorities and communicating with suppliers, manufacturers and colleagues across the business.
To be considered for this opportunity, you will need:
- Professional experience in mechanical design in a manufacturing environment or a closely related engineering environment.
- Strong 3D CAD skills, ideally using SolidWorks or another leading CAD software.
- Experience producing detailed mechanical designs and manufacturing drawings.
- An understanding of machining, welding and heavy steel fabrication.
- The ability to design practical, cost-effective components and assemblies for manufacture.
- Experience sourcing engineering materials and mechanical components and ideally able to assess, select and manage external suppliers.
- Practical knowledge of CE marking, UKCA requirements or comparable product compliance processes.
- The confidence to provide technical support to both engineering and non-engineering colleagues.
- The ability to travel occasionally when required.
Qualifications and Experience
You should hold one of the following:
A BEng or MEng in Mechanical Engineering, Design or a related discipline, or equivalent
Or:
An HNC or HND in an appropriate engineering subject and relevant industry experience.
Desirable Experience
Experience in any of the following areas would be particularly advantageous:
- Lifting equipment or lifting accessories.
- Material-handling systems.
- Transport equipment.
- Heavy-duty fabricated products.
- Aerospace, Aviation or Aircraft sector
- Safety-critical mechanical engineering.
- Bespoke or low-volume engineered products.
- Special purpose machinery
However, sector-specific experience is not essential. The Technical Director will provide product and application guidance to an engineer who brings the right mechanical design and manufacturing foundation.

Location and Hybrid Working
The position combines working from home with attendance at the company’s premises near Farnborough, Hampshire.
Applicants should live within a practical travelling distance of Farnborough and be available to attend the site when required. The location may suit candidates based in or around Aldershot, Fleet, Camberley, Basingstoke, Guildford, Woking, Bracknell or Reading.
Occasional travel to suppliers, manufacturing partners, customer sites or other business locations will form part of the role.
