How to stand out in your job search while also coming to terms with Job hunting in a digital age can be a daunting and often overwhelming process. There are many job search mistakes to avoid as well as new and exciting avenues to explore.
However, with the right strategies and mindset, you can navigate the job market more effectively and land the position you desire.
Here are Senex Recruitment’s top tips to help you in your job search journey and how to find a job.
Job Hunting Tips - Update Your Curriculum Vitae
It is obvious but your Curriculum Vitae is the first impression you make on potential employers or Recruitment Consultants. Ensure it is up-to-date, error-free, and includes all the relevant experience demonstrating your suitability for each job you apply for. Highlight relevant experience, skills, and accomplishments that align with the job description.
Use keywords from the job posting to pass through applicant tracking systems (ATS).
We are often asked “How to tailor your resume for different jobs” and should “I tailor my CV?”
Senex Recruitment is not an advocate of “tailored” CV’s. Either you have the experience required for the job posting or not. “Tailoring” suggest that you could be enhancing your profile beyond your core competencies. Do not do this. However, with subtle ordering of skills and an improved profile adding emphasis on your key skills it could make the difference. Do not fabricate or embellish any experience on your CV it will be found out. We therefore suggest having a very good "catch all" CV, with a simple lay out and concise and informative list list of experiences and duties. You can read more about producing an exceptional CV including a CV template here.
The cover letter is redundant
It is often said that a well-crafted cover letter can set you apart from other candidates. However, at Senex Recruitment we disagree with this. The cover letter was relevant pre-digital. Now it is verging on redundancy.
What is essential is the email you send with your CV attachment. This needs to be concise, relevant and inviting. Cover letters are too long and add very little to your application. It is only needed if requested by the employer which will be stated.
In our experience cover letters are rarely read and it is better to invest your time in honing your CV profile and improving your social media presence.
Job Hunting Tips - Job Boards and online searching
Job hunting in a digital age has led to many advances in how applicants find their new job. However, the growth of dominate players in the job boards market has meant that a monopoly has been created. The monetisation of the jobs market ensures that not all advertised jobs are equal. Jobs are not advertised in terms of quality or best fit for you. Jobs, listed at the top of a job search pay to be there.
Ask your self a question? What is the reason for the company paying to be at a top of a list on Indeed? The reason is not always that they are expanding!
With the increased financial and structural problems in the online jobs board sector, for example the likes of Indeed have recently announced redundancies. This aggressive monetization will continue. Therefore, the best jobs in the job market will be trickier to find.
However, there is a solution, Google.
Why is this one of our top Job Hunting Tips? Because, Google has an impressive job posting facility. Unlike, many of the paid boards how jobs are listed on Google is a result of quality. It is not a paid service, so the jobs you find here are based purely on the relevance to your search. In their own words:
"Important: Job listing providers don’t pay Google to appear in job search results and can’t pay to influence their ranking."
You can find out more about how to search Google jobs here and if you want to know more about Google’s Business philosophy head here.
You can also use Google to follow a company’s jobs listing such as Senex Recruitment's. Google will notify you as soon as a new job is released by a specific company. Notifications can also be set up for other parameters.
Job Board aggregators will also list all vacancies so the use of Jooble, Adzuna and Jora can lead to excellent results.
We are also a support of Niche job boards such as our partner The Jobs Board. Which have a personal and ethical approach to the local job market.
Additionally, visit company websites to apply directly through their career pages. Many companies post jobs exclusively on their own sites, and applying this way can sometimes give you an edge.
Job Hunting Tips - Leverage LinkedIn
Using LinkedIn for job hunting is essential as LinkedIn is a powerful tool for job seekers. Make sure your profile is complete, professional, and mirrors your resume. Use a professional photo, write a compelling headline, and detail your experience and skills. Connect with industry professionals, join relevant groups, and engage with content to increase your visibility.

This is fast becoming the number one source of vacancies online. Also join groups in your sector, or relevant to job hunting.
This advice applies to Facebook, to a lesser extent and also X and Instagram.

Network Actively
Networking is often cited as one of the most effective ways to find a job. So, reach out to contacts in your field or ex-colleagues that you trust. Don’t hesitate to ask for advice. Often, personal connections can lead to job opportunities that are not advertised.
If you are in a specialised field attend industry events and join professional organizations. Many organisations such as CIPS, IMECHE and ICHEME often have job boards on their website. As mentioned earlier LinkedIn groups is also a strong avenue to find job opportunities.
